What are mental models?

What are Mental Models?

Mental models are concepts and frameworks we use to understand the world around us and make decisions — in other words it's how we simplify complexity. They guide in understanding the world around you (e.g. "Game Theory" give you an understanding of how relationships and trust work) and how to make decisions (e.g. "Circle of Competence" helps you be aware of your blind-spots). Not all Mental Models will feel useful to you, but having a broad understanding of these is like having an instruction manual on how to live life with clarity, rationally, and in an effective way.

What are Cognitive biases?

What are Cognitive Biases?

Think of Cognitive Biases as the human equivalent of software bugs. A cognitive bias is an error in thinking while processing the information and interactions around you that affect your decisions and judgements. Becoming aware of our own brain limitations is key to being able to avoid these (or at least double-check if we're falling for it). For example, "Confirmation Bias" teaches us that we're much more likely to agree and respond favourably to information we already agree with. The problem is this might prevent us from challenging our own thoughts and beliefs. Being aware of these thought-traps (even if we think we don't fall for them) is the only way to make better decisions.

Combining the mastery of mental models and understanding of underlying cognitive biases are a powerful toolset to think better, make better decisions and live a better life.

What you get out of it, you ask?

Many of the world's most successful people are so because they apply mental models daily and are aware of their own cognitive biases.
